Chennai: The Singapore-based NYK Ship Management Pte Ltd will plans to recruit around 60 cadets — 30 engineers and 30 deck workers — from two Indian maritime institutes — RL Institute of National Science, Madurai and Tolani Maritime Institute, Pune — with whjom it has signed an agreement.

NYK Ship Management is part of the $10 billion NYK group, Japan's largest owning around 780 ships consisting of bulk carriers, large containers, car carriers, product and crude oil tankers, LPG and LNG carriers.

The company recruits around 300 Indian marine engineers every year.

Explaining the tie-up with the two Indian institutes, managing director A K Atre said, "We will provide special training to the selected candidates as per our requirements so that they are ready soon after they finish their courses."

Recruiting Indian sea cadets is part of NYK Ship Management's strategy of diversification of nationalities in running the ships as well as to reduce its manpower cost. The company has around 30 ships wholly manned by Indians.

"We `baby-sit' ships. We take care of all aspects of running the ship like staffing, maintenance, for a fixed fee. The ship owner bothers only about booking the freight to be carried," remarked Atre.
