Industries in Maharashtra are facing severe power crunch following the continuing strike in Andhra Pradesh demanding the creation of a separate Telenga state.

State power utility in Maharashtra, Mahavitaran, has decided to impose a 16-hour staggering day for industrial power consumers in the state from tomorrow.

The Telengana stir has affected movement of coal to power plants in Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, resulting in curbs on power generation and consumption. Consequently, power supplies to neibhouring states have been curtailed.

Mahavitaran has limited the power cut to once a week, although Maharashtra is currently experiencing a power shortfall of 3500-4000 MW.

Load shedding will be imposed once a week beginning Wednesday, a Mahavitaran statement issued last night said.

Normalcy in power supply can be restored once the ongoing agitation in Andhra Pradesh is resolved, say officials of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL).
