Raja, two aides held in spectrum case
02 Feb 2011
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today arrested former telecom minister and two of his close aides, RK Chandolia and Siddharth Behura, in connection with the 2G spectrum case.
The three were arrested for allegedly abusing their official position and manipulating the tendering procedures to benefit certain telecom companies in the allocation of radio spectrum.
Chandolia, who was Raja's private secretary during the first UPA government, returned as economic advisor to Raja when he was made telecom minister in the second (current) UPA government.
Chandolia allegedly interacted with the licensees who were allocated 2G frequency at bargain-basement prices by the telecom ministry.
Siddharth Behura, who was telecom secretary during the period 1 January 2008 to 30 September 2009, signed off the files that formalised the sale of 2G licences.
Raja arrived at the CBI headquarters this morning, a day after the agency questioned his brother A K Perumal in connection with the alleged funding of some front organisations owned by telecom companies, which had been allocated spectrum from October 2007 to January 2008.
