Raymond Crosswords Book Awards 2014 celebrates Indian writing

The 13th edition of the `Raymond Crosswords Book Awards 2014' held on Tuesday at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA), Mumbai, saw some of the country's bestselling writers and their books honoured.

The event saw enthusiastic response from various distinguished writers, publishers, critics and book-lovers as nominees from five different categories were facilitated with gifts and certificates.

The authors shortlisted for the awards included Ravinder Singh, Durjoy Dutta, Ashwin Sanghi, S Hussain Zaidi, Rashmi Bansal, Anand Neelkantan, Christopher Doyle, Ravi Subramanian, Jerry Pinto, Amitabha Bagchi who were also present at the event.

Winners of the 'Raymond Crossword Book Award 2014' included:

  • Anees Salim, who won the `Raymond Crossword Book Award in the Indian Fiction' category for the book The Blind Lady's Descendants;
  • Samanth Subramanian, who won the award for `Indian Non-Fiction' category for stories from the Sri Lankan War, This Divided Island;
  • Sundara Ramaswamy, who won the award in the `Indian language Translation' category for his translation of Lakshmi Holmstrom's book, Children, Women, Men;
  • Ravi Subramanian, who won the `Popular Award' for his book, Bankerupt; and
  • Shals Mahajan Duckbill, who won the `Kotak Junior Children Writing Award' for his book Timmi in Tangles.

The awards are intended to promote the Indian writing through Crossword bookstores within the country. ''We also want to ensure that good writing gets a lot of coverage'', Crossword Bookstores' CEO Kinjal Shah said.

Shah thanked readers, authors, publishers, the jury and the sponsors for their support in the endeavour of rewarding the best of Indian Literature.

Commenting on this occasion, Madhu Dutta, marketing head, lifestyle business, Raymond Limited, said that Raymond was very happy to be associated with Crossword Book Award  to celebrate the seamless synergy between a reader and the 'Sartorialist'.

Eminent jurist and former mayor and sheriff of Mumbai Nana Chudasama, social activist Shaina NC besides fashion designers and politicians were among those who attended the function.
