Saudi Arabia has allowed Research In Motion Ltd to continue BlackBerry messaging services but the authorities in the kingdom have asked the Canadian company to institute a system whereby they can monitor user data.

The country allowed a second deadline to the company to pass without shutting BlackBerry Messenger, which gives the Waterloo, Ontario-based RIM and the three wireless companies more time to time to tweak their services to meet local laws according to the Saudi Press Agency which cited the telecommunication regulator.

According to analysts the absence of a new deadline indicates that a solution may be at hand.

The situation in Saudi Arabia are being watched closely in other countries that are seeking similar access to the BlackBerry network.

Authorities in several other countries including India and Indonesia are asking RIM to address their security concerns over BlackBerry e-mail and messaging. The countries feel that the BlackBerry network could be used to violate laws or national mores.

Saudi Arabia is seeking access to BlackBerry communications to prevent terrorism and illegal activities.
