Entrepreneur Sabeer Bhatia is attempting a game changing innovation, yet again. However, the founder of Hotmail is attempting to repeat the 15-year-old feat in the mobile application space.
Jaxtr Inc, a firm founded by Sabeer Bhatia and Yogesh Patel, launched JaxtrSMS, an open texting application that enables users to send free SMSs. At present, SMSs are charged anywhere between 50 paise to Re 1, and upto Rs 15 per SMS depending on the schemes.
JaxtrSMS enables a mobile user to send a text SMS to any mobile phone in the world without requiring the receiver to have the JaxtrSMS application installed on her phone. This open facet of JaxtrSMS distinguishes it from other free mobile messaging applications where messages can only be sent within a closed network to people who also have the same application installed.
JaxtrSMS retains the number of the user and no new number is required while signing up for the JaxtrSMS service.
''The world is moving towards mobile phones. Today mobile opportunity is bigger than Internet. While in 2003 over 3 billion SMS were sent, the number is likely to reach 12 trillion SMS by 2015, which is huge. We want to revolutionalise this space by making SMS free,'' Sabeer Bhatia said.
''Fifteen years ago, we gave you Hotmail.com, the world's first webmail service that freed up e-mail from the confines of the desktop and aided the creation of a global communications network which was completely open and free for users. Today, we present JaxtrSMS which does to SMS what Hotmail did for e-mail,'' he added.
