The Supreme Court hearing a public interest litigation against the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) in Tamil Nadu today asked the central government about the mechanisms to handle nuclear waste at the plant after it becomes operational.

A bench of Justices KS Radhakrishanan and Deepak Misra asked the union government and the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL), which operates the Russian-built plant, to provide information on how they intend to transport the nuclear waste out of the plant and store it in safety.

"Where would it (nuclear waste) go and what impact would it have on environment and people's health if it is transported to another place," the bench asked, adding, "How much of such waste can be stored and for how long?"

It said that issues pertaining to health and environment are as important as safety precautions of the plant and asked the government and the NPCIL to reply on the matter.

Solicitor general Rohinton Nariman, appearing for NPCIL, replied that he would file an affidavit in which all the queries would be answered.

He submitted that the plant is completely safe and can withstand any kind of natural disaster or terrorist attack.
