SC rejects Kanimozhi's bail plea in 2G spectrum case
20 Jun 2011
The Supreme Court today rejected the bail plea of DMK Member of Parliament and daughter of DMK supremo M Karunanidhi, M K Kanimozhi and Sharad Kumar, managing director of her Kalaignar TV - both accused in the 2G spectrum allocation case.
A special bench comprising Justice G S Singhvi and Justice B S Chauhan, which heard the bail pleas, asked the two to go back to the special court seeking bail. The SC bench said the special CBI court would decide on bail for the two after the charges are framed against them.
The special court can consider a fresh bail application of the two without referring to or being influenced by the earlier bail proceedings, the SC noted.
The duo had moved the SC on 10 June after the Delhi high court dismissed their bail plea on 8 June.
The two have been lodged in Tihar jail since 20 May after the special court turned down their bail application.
The CBI claims Swan Telecom has routed a Rs200-crore bribe to Kanimozhi and Kumar as "reward for undue favours" shown by A Raja, former minister for communications and IT, in the allocation of 2G spectrum.
