Smartphone users vulnerable to cyber-attacks: study
25 Nov 2014
One in six smartphone users had been the victim of a cyber-attack reported.
According to reports, 60 per cent of global smartphone users and 50 per cent of tablet users were reportedly vulnerable to hacking attacks, as they did not possess any protection against malicious software.
The latest Experian report said one in six smartphone users had been the victim of a cyber-attack.
According to Experian lead researcher Ori Eisen, the rapid rise in demand for online banking and retail combined with very little security on devices had created a massive opportunity for cybercriminals leaving many people and businesses extremely vulnerable.
There were approximately 5 billion connected devices globally, serving a billion online bank accounts and contributing $13 trillion to global e-commerce sales and transactions. He added, with so much at stake, the opportunities for fraudsters were countless and more needed to be done both by industry and individuals.
According to the report cyber-attacks ranged from phishing emails to session hijacking attacks, in which a hacker would disrupt, monitor or even hijack users' web browsing.
The report said, smartphone users were not aware their expensive devices could be targeted by mobile malware.
