Societies to govern six AIIMS-like institutions
09 Aug 2010
The union cabinet today approved the formation of societies for the six AIIMS-like bodies being set up under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana.
The societies to be registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, will help provide a governance structure to the institutions that have been lacking a governing body.
The societies will have a two-tier organisation and management structure. The representatives will be chosen by the governing council headed by the union health minister from among ministries and departments of the centre and related organisations.
Apart from the management team, a board of governors with the secretary of health and family welfare as the chairperson along with representatives from state governments, will be brought in force.
Also, the governing council will nominate people with special knowledge in the field of science and medicine.
The societies will be functional until the institutes are brought under an act of Parliament.
The institutes approved by the cabinet in 2006 will come up at Patna, Raipur, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Jodhpur and Rishikesh at a cost of Rs840 crore per institution.
