Bangalore: STD booths are all set to render high-tech services with a range of, among other, facilities for electricity and water bill payment, Internet telephony and point-to-point video conferencing.

STD booth-owners from across India have joined hands to form All India Sanchar Seva PCO Society, which will upgrade the existing booths into hi-tech service centres. This was announced by the societys chairman, Surjeet Singh Kungar, at a press conference here.

The society has decided to upgrade about 22,500 booths in about 63 cities across the country on an experimental basis starting 26 January 2003. In Bangalore, as many as 1,200 of a total of 16,000 booths will be upgraded under the pilot test.

In order to provide these services, the society has tied up with various organisations such as Tata Consultancy Services and Sun Microsystems.
