Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy today asked prime minister Manmohan Singh to provide the tainted former telecom minister A Raja with high-level security over fears for his life.

Some people are trying to silence him "forever" since he is a key to much "embarrassing" information for "some of those in power" today, Swamy wrote in a letter to the prime minister.

Swamy's fresh revelations come amidst concerted moves by opposition parties to press for a joint parliamentary probe into the murky deals in the allocation of 2G spectrum by the telecom ministry.

The Supreme Court has also questioned the prime minister for his "alleged inaction and silence" for 16 months over a plea seeking prosecution of the then telecom minister A Raja in connection with the alleged irregularities in allocation of 2G spectrum.

Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) today demanded an explanation from the prime minister on the Supreme Court's observations on his 'alleged inaction and silence' on the plea for sanction for prosecution Raja.

BJP leader L K Advani said it was for the "first time" in the history of Independent India that the apex court has "pointed fingers" at the head of the union government.
