Mumbai: According to the 17th Electric Power Survey of India, published by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), the estimated electricity demand and energy requirement for the state of Tamil Nadu are projected to be 14,224 MW and 87,222 million units respectively at the end of the 11th 5-year Plan in 2011-12.

The power sector in India plans to generate a capacity of more than 78,577 MW of power to meet the estimated all-India demand through projects in the central, state and private sectors. Under the state sector, the state of Tamil Nadu has been proposed a capacity addition of 1,152 MW of power. The state will also have a share in the central sector projects likely to yield benefits during 11th Plan in the southern region.

However, in addition to the proposed generation capacity addition, the inter-state transmission capacity is also being augmented by the Central Government to enable inter-state transfer of power.

The Union Power Minister Sushilkumar Shinde gave this information in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha.
