Telenor to participate in 2G spectrum auction, Sistema opts out

Telenor Group has confirmed its participation in the 2G spectrum auction by submitting an application for pre-qualification in the 1800 MHz band spectrum auction even as Russia's Sistema has decided not to participate in the upcoming auction for spectrum hoping that a curative petition filed in the Supreme Court will help it preserve its current licences.
Telewings Communication Services Private Limited, a fully owned Telenor Group company, formed after its separation from Uninor, the Indian joint venture with Unitech, submitted its prequalification application to the Department of Telecommunications today.
Telenor Group has indicated its interest to take part in the auction, and provided all necessary documents and financial guarantees requested to be eligible for participation in its application. A final decision on whether or not to participate will be made before the auction starts, the company said in a release.
Telenor said it is continuing efforts to secure a new Indian partner and to obtain all necessary approvals to transfer Uninor assets into the new company.
Sistema, on the other hand, has decided not to participate in the upcoming auction for spectrum. The company has filed a curative petition in the Supreme Court and is hoping that its licences will not be cancelled.
Other major players, including Idea Cellular, Airtel, Vodafone and Tata Telservices have also put in their applications.
