Three power projects in AP idling for want of gas

Three power projects in Andhra Pradesh, the coastal state that links India's major offshore gas production blocks to the mainland, are idling for lack of gas allocation.

Reports say three gas-based power projects, developed by Reliance Power, Lanco and GMR in the state are ready for power generation, if only gas is allocated from RIL-owned D6 Block in the Krishna-Godavari basin.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had, last week, assured private power developers such as the Ambanis, Tatas, Ruias, and GMR to resolve their problems soon, but on a time-bound basis.

The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said it would set up a committee of secretaries under the chairmanship of the principal secretary to the prime minister to suggest a roadmap to a solution.

That, however, seems to be a long process and the idling of generation capacity at a time when the country is in dire shortage of power is a criminal waste of resources.

The 384 MW GMR Rajahmundry Energy Ltd, at Vemagiri, is already synchronised to the grid, but is still waiting for gas allocation for starting its power generation, reports quoting state government sources said.
