UK government advisers say that nuclear power would continue to be the cheapest way for the UK to up its low-carbon energy supply for at least a decade.

But according to the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) renewables should provide 30-45 per cent of the nation's energy by 2030.

According to CCC chief executive David Kennedy, people argue that offshore wind is very expensive which is true and nuclear at the moment looked like the lowest cost low-carbon option.

However, he added that significant cost reductions could be expected over the next two decades across a range of technologies, whether wind, marine and solar and that was they reason why the technologies were promising.

He said wind could replace nuclear as the cheapest option withing 15-20 years.

Environmental groups have given the report a mixed reception.
