A factory that would turn landfill waste into renewable energy will be set up in Teesside, UK for bringing jobs to the region, according to the owners.

Air Products would build the plant at the energy and technology business park, near Billingham, with regular operations slated to get under way in 2014.

The company said, around 700 workers would build the plant and 50 people would be taken on to run it.

The company hopes to generate enough energy from the plant to power 50,000 homes a year.

According to John McGlade, president of Air Products, the site would be one of the largest renewable energy plants in the world.

According to McGlade, Air Products had longstanding expertise in building and operating large-scale industrial gas and energy-related projects on a safe, reliable and cost-effective basis.

He added, the facility would also create skilled jobs in the area and the company hoped it would provide an indirect boost to the local economy through the use of local service companies, hotels and other businesses.
