Wiki goes mobile
19 Dec 2008
Wikipedia lovers are going to be really pleased as the site launches its dedicated interface for mobile phones. Optimised for access from basic phones with WAP browsers, information is now literally at your fingertips.
There had been several alternatives to access Wikipedia pages while on the move but the site by itself had not rolled out anything.
The kilobyte economy is also commendable, as the usual Wikipedia a search page from which you can query your entries has replaced the usual start page. Except for the wikipedia logo, no graphics have been usedm, which optimises it for even the basic handsets.
Also the articles are broken into separate chunks and put into different pages, which speeds up browsing. Information will come to you in the language and form you choose with the yet-to-be-launched 'Spoken Wikipedia' feature. Imagine articles being read out to you, exciting and truly worth the wait.
The site has been designed with a 14 language support.
