Taxi service aggregator Ola has created safety zones or temporary 'homes' in flood-hit Chennai to support and assist the people in the city, the company said on Thursday. "Citizens who are in need of food and accommodation can head to these centres to avail services free of cost. These homes are equipped with relief supplies and first aid kits will be available for all free of cost," Ola said in a statement.

This was an initiative by Ola to extend help and relief to Chennai citizens, after it provided boats to move citizens to safer areas in the city a few days ago.

Social networking giant Facebook also activated its Safety Check feature in Chennai, early last morning. With the Safety Check feature, people can mark themselves as "safe" from the floods.

Heavy rains and water logging brought Chennai to a grinding halt and disrupted lives of many.

Over the last 24-hours, Chennai had received 345 mm of rain, which was the highest ever for a single day in the last 114 years.

The home ministry said 269 people had lost their lives due to the calamity in the state so far.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who conducted an aerial survey yesterday taking stock of the situation arising due to the devastating floods in the state, announced a relief package of Rs1,000 crore.
