12 Jan 2011
US-based online discounts site Groupon has expanded its global presence to India with the acquisition of Kolkata-based Friday Media's daily deal site, SoSasta.
sosasta.com, launched in October 2010, is present in 11 cities - Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Delhi/NCR, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Nagpur, Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore.
Without disclosing the size of the deal, Groupon said in a communique that SoSasta will now be rebranded as Groupon.com.
Apart from India, the company has also entered into the Israel and South American markets with the acquisitions of Grouper in Israel and Twangoo in South Africa. These websites will also be rebranded to the Groupon name.
''Collective buying is in its infancy in India, Israel and South Africa and we see strong potential,'' said Rob Solomon, president and chief operating officer of Groupon.
Groupon India and Groupon South Africa will be available in English while Groupon Israel will be available in Hebrew.
