Home ministry setting up 5-person panel to tackle cybercrime

Union home minister Rajnath Singh has approved the setting up of a five-member expert group to tackle cybercrime, which is reported to have been growing at a rate of about 40 per cent a year over the last few years.

The members of the expert group will be C-DAC (Pune) director-general Rajat Moona, Professor Krishnan of the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, CERT-In director-general Gulshan Rai, Manindra Aggarwal of IIT-Kanpur and D Dass of IIIT-Bengaluru.

 ''India, with a fast growing economy, is susceptible to international and domestic cyber-attacks, and there is a need to ensure a cybercrime-free environment,'' a home ministry statement said on Wednesday.

Joint secretary (centre-state) Kumar Alok will be the convener of the group, which will prepare a roadmap for effectively tackling cybercrime and give suitable recommendations on possible partnerships with the public and private sectors.

The expert study group has been tasked with the job of preparing a road map for effectively tackling cyber crimes in the country and suggesting suitable recommendations. Besides, the group will recommend possible partnerships with public and private sector, NGOs, international bodies and international NGOs as also suggest other special measures/ steps that the group may consider important with regard to tackling cyber crimes.
