Indian businesses take hours, even days to detect cyber attacks

A study has shown that 59 per cent of India organisations had suffered cyber-attacks but what made it worse was that it took hours and even days for the organisations to detect the cyber-attacks during which time is vital and personal data was often compromised.

"Enterprises need to respond more rapidly and effectively to security breaches by investing in integrated, adaptive cybersecurity architectures for the borderless network," senior executive vice-president for worldwide sales and support at Fortinet, Patrice Perche said, The Times of India reported. Fortinet, a California-based cyber security service provider tracks and provides cyber security strategies.

Only 14 per cent of the companies studied in the 2016 Fortinet Global Security Survey could detect a breach within minutes of the occurrence of a cyber-attack.

"Such a deficiency in rapid, effective threat identification and response is proven to be highly costly to breached organizations as sensitive data is lost, systems are compromised and brand reputation is damaged," the study observed.

The study, which was conducted by Lightspeed GMI surveyed 643 companies in the Asia Pacific Region. "Our independent study highlights the urgent need among enterprise-scale organizations from all sectors in APAC to prioritize end-to-end cyber-security protection with actionable, threat intelligence capabilities in the face of new digital business challenges," Perche said.

Meanwhile, an Indian cyber security organisation claimed it had broken into Pakistan's critical infrastructure systems, including the country's defence infrastructure, and would be ready to destroy the infrastructure system if the need arose, and if the Indian government were to give the go ahead according to a top official of the organisation.

''We have entered the critical infrastructure of Pakistan. The moment we get the go-ahead, we will destroy these,'' S Amar Prasad Reddy, additional director-  general, National Cyber Safety and Security Standards, said at the ''National Cyber Defence Summit 2016'' at Anna University seminar in Chennai.
