After a recessionary slump, personal computer sales in India are on the rise again. Just over 22 lakh PCs were sold in the country during the July-September quarter, recording a 24 per cent growth over the April-June quarter, according to leading market information technology research firm IDC.
"This performance underlines the recovery in the PC market," IDC India manager Kapil Dev Singh said in Mumbai today, adding that the July-September quarter saw a strong boost from new-found consumer confidence.
Year-on-year however, PC sales fell 3.1 per cent from the July-September quarter last year.
Personal computer shipments have grown for the last three consecutive quarters after dropping sharply from a peak of 22,59,000 units in the July-September 2008 to 15,60,000 units in October-December 2008.
Of the total PC sales, desktops accounted for nearly two-thirds at 14,58,000 units, with laptops and notebooks accounting for the remaining 7,00,000 units. Desktops accounted for nearly two-thirds of total PC sales at 1.46 million units, down 6.7 per cent over last year but up 15.2 per cent over April-June. However, notebook PC shipments rose 5.2 per cent over last year to 7,31,707 units.
In the overall PC (notebooks and desktops) market, HP (Hewlett-Packard) retained the top spot with a market share of 17.1 per cent, while Dell (11.3 per cent) and Acer (11.1 per cent) took the second and third spots.
"Commercial PC sales can be expected to steadily improve as the economy recovers. Even though the consumer PC segment recorded a faster 28 per cent growth, the industry will need to watch how the recovery in consumer PC shipments unfolds in the quarters ahead," IDC India lead analyst Sumanta Mukherjee said.
"Commercial personal computer sales can be expected to steadily improve as the economy recovers," said Sumanta Mukherjee, analyst with IDC India.
He however added that the emerging mini-notebook personal computer segment needs to evolve in terms of processing power, graphics capabilities, innovation and functionality to compete with mainstream notebooks.
