Aakash, the world's cheapest tablet offering from Datawind, has finally hit the Indian market with the company placing 30,000 tablets online for sale.
Akash, with a price tag of Rs2,500 apiece, is now available through its portal 'aakashtablet.com'.
The tablet, with a 7-inch touch screen, features 256 megabytes of RAM, ARM 11 processor with the Android 2.2 operating system, two USB ports and HD-quality video.
Aakash is expected to launch a commercial version of its tablet, named the Ubislate 7, with a faster processor, in late January.
Ubislate 7, which will have a 700 Mhz processor, will be priced at Rs3,000 for online sales.
Meanwhile, the government is planning to provide a new specification for Akash in order to improve its performance parameters, better battery life and expanded memory.
The current version of the Akash tablet has a battery life of 1-1/2 hours.
The device is part of the government's plan to link 25,000 colleges and 400 universities in an e-learning programme.
