Cable operators bid to stop film piracy

Mumbai: National Cable and Telecommunications Association (NCTA), a body representing the cable TV and telecommunication industry, has come out with a suggestion to halt film piracy.
While holding discussions with I&B Minister Sushma Swaraj, it suggested that NCTA be given exclusive rights for films to be shown on satellite channels. The move, the association feels, will go a long way in curbing film piracy by cable operators The body will also end up operating like a distributor instead of a local programmer.
The body has also suggested that the Cable Act should be amended and an order, ruling all encrypted channels be allowed to be broadcast only after conditional access set-top boxes are installed at viewers end, must be passed.
Speaking to the Press after the talks, Swaraj said: We will look into NCTAs recommendations and will come out with some concrete measures soon.
