Market ends flat: FMCG, energy, realty stocks up

The markets ended the day on a flat note but were off day''s low. Buying support came from FMCG, enegy and realty stocks. Selling pressure was seen in IT pivotals followed by select metal and banking stocks.

Smallcap and midcap indices outperformed the benchmark indices. BSE Midcap index was up 0.6% and the Smallcap index was up 1%.

RIL has acquired polyester assets of Malaysia-based Hualon. The stocks has reacted positively and in one of the most active counter today. Reliance was trading at Rs 1,986.00 up 1.25%.

ITC, NTPC, Ambuja Cements, Reliance Petro and BPCL were among the top gainers on the indices.

Sensex was up 6.41 points or 0.04% at 15596.83, and the Nifty down 1.65 points or 0.04% at 4507.85.

About 1779 shares have advanced, 1175 shares declined, and 67 shares are unchanged.

The BSE Midcap Index ended at 6,884.39 up 33 points or 0.48%.

The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 8,514.37 up 81 points or 0.96%.

The BSE Bankex was up 0.06% at 8,100.37. Kotak Mahindra, Andhra Bank, SBI, Bank of Baroda, Oriental Bank moved upwards.

The BSE Capital Goods Index was up 0.3% at 13,654.29. Bharat Bijlee, Jyoti Structure, Alstom Projects, Triveni Engg, Bharat Elec, ABB closed higher.

The BSE Health Care Index was up 0.4% at 3,720.81. Orchid Chemical, Glenmark, Sterling Bio, Ranbaxy Labs closed higher.

The BSE Auto Index closed at 4,900.37 up 0.22%. TVS Motor, Escorts, Apollo Tyres, Hind Motors surged.

The BSE Metal Index closed flat at 11,606.05. SAIL, Sesa Goa, NALCO, Jindal Steel, JindalStainless advanced higher.

The BSE IT Index lost 1.9% at 4,967.35. HCL Tech, Mphasis, Wipro, TCS, Infosys lower.

BSE Oil and Gas Index closed gained 1% to close at 8,259.93. Reliance Petro, Petronet LNG, BPCL, HPCL ended in green.

The BSE FMCG Index ended at 1,620.85 up 2%. ITC, United Spirits, Tata Tea, Godrej Consumer ended higher.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 8894.52 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 37333.48 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 4059.17 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 50287.17 crore.

Asian markets were trading weak. Japanese stocks fell sharply today, reacting to a sell-off on Wall Street in the previous session and a stronger yen, with exporters such as Sony Corp. and financials such as Mizuho Financial Group leading the decline. Japan''s Nikkei plunged 2.11% or 340.49 points at 15,781.67, Hong Kong''s Hang Seng fell 1.54% or 370.12 points at 23,612.49, Taiwan''s Taiwan Weighted declined 0.92% or 83.02 points at 8,935.06, Singapore''s Straits Times was down 2.11% or 73.60 points at 3,415.37 and South Korea''s Seoul Composite slipped 2.91% or 54.83 points at 1,830.07.
