Sensex plummets to 7,700-levels

The stock markets opened the first day of trading session this week in a free fall with the benchmark Sensex plunging by 933.86 or a fall of 10.73 per cent before lunch, due to sustained capital outflows, after having opened at 8599.

The Bombay Stock Exchange 30-share barometer was quoted at 7,767.21 at 1:00 pm from its previous close on Friday 24 October.

The 50-share Nifty of the National Stock Exchange also fell by 221.20 points or 8.56 per cent to 2,362.82 at 1100 from its last close.

The major indexes were:
SENSEX 7,767.21 -933.86 -10.73
MIDCAP 2,828.02 -267.66 -8.65
SMLCAP 3,365.88 -295.95 -8.08
BSE-500 2,921.25 -336.54 -10.33

Taiwan Weighted Index was down by 5.65 per cent, Hang Seng by 4.22 per cent, Shanghai Composite by 3.61 per cent, Kospi by 2.21 per cent and Nikkei by 0.21 per cent in their early trade on Monday.

Realty stocks, however, attracted heavy buying support at the prevailing lower levels.

The BSE Realty Index was quoted up by 43.02 points or 2.47 per cent.

Bank stocks were hit hard registering huge losses due to heavy selling pressure.
