Theft or loss of a notebook, as in laptop computer, is a major concern nowadays. Not only are notebooks ubiquitous, they also hold all kinds of data that in the wrong hands would prove detrimental to the concerned parties.

It is to address these concerns that Micro Technologies India has come up with an innovative product to track lost or stolen notebooks using the power of the Internet, which it calls, rather blandly, LNTS or Lost Notebook Tracking System.

This product is software that must be installed on a notebook's hard drive to be operational, where it subsequently works in stealth mode. In the event of theft, it is activated and silently connects with the company's monitoring centre, whenever the notebook is connected to the Internet. Users can log into their Web-based personal tracking and monitoring page to trace from where the laptop has been accessed.

It also offers additional security features and management tools like sending out regular emails for notebook activity, hiding documents that carry vital information, storing data in a date-wise manner, intimating login information on mobile and email, remotely monitoring of user specified URL/Document, and getting the list of installed software.

Dr. P Sekhar, chairman and managing director of Micro Technologies, says, "LNTS is just the incidental name. It is also a manageability tool for files and folders as well as a parental control system for tracking the online activities done by children. The system can be used to keep a check on the number of hours children spend on the Internet and what kind of websites they visit."

Micro LNTS is available in three different models: Micro LNTS - Elite and Premium for individual users and Micro LNTS - Corporate for large organizations and corporate use. The Elite model is priced at Rs.600, while the Premium version costs Rs1500. Users will need to renew the software every year to be able to continue using it.

However, not unlike other security and tracking systems, it too suffers from a drawback – if a thief formats the hard drive of the notebook before connecting to the Internet, the software will be deleted from the system.

Micro Technologies India's net profit rose 21.48 per cent to Rs.14.42 crore on 20.69 per cent growth in net sales to Rs.46.60 in Q3 December 2007 over Q2 September 2007.

The company provides information technology (IT) solutions. The services of the company include system integration, software services and products, technical services, E commerce and Internet services.
