Bajaj Auto struggles with costs
New Delhi: According to Bajaj Auto's vice-chairman, Madhur Bajaj, drop in demand had compelled the company to move to a five-day week at its scooter plant in Pune. He also said that despite a series of voluntary retirement schemes, Bajaj Auto still has a surplus of 1,000 workers at its Pune plant. The firm, at present, has about 12,000 permanent workers and staff on its rolls.

Bajaj Auto is also in the process of developing two new scooter models, which would be launched in the current fiscal.

Embraer: Showcasing its 170 jet
New Delhi: Brazil-based Embraer has showcased its new-generation Embraer 170 jet in Delhi. As per the company's estimates, the 70 to 110 seater aircraft market would soon account for 23 per cent of the total aircraft market, up from 16 per cent now.

The new generation aircraft project, which was developed by the airframe manufacturer at a cost of around $1 billion in 1999, already has an order book position of $11.9 billion till the year 2006.

The company said that in the next 20 years, this market would be worth $180 billion representing 8450 aircraft. Of this 14 per cent of the market would be in Asia. While China would corner 8 per cent of this market, India and Australia would corner the majority of the balance demand for 6 per cent, representing 480 planes.
