MicroMRI to present VBB technology
Philadelphia, USA: MicroMRI will be presenting the Virtual Bone Biopsy technology, the next level of care in osteoporosis detection, treatment and prevention.
Osteoporosis affects 12 million people in the US, with an additional 34 million people at increased risk for the disease. Osteoporosis causes more than 1.5 million fractures annually at a direct cost exceeding $17 billion annually. In osteoporosis, fracture risk is determined from two factors: bone density and bone quality. The tool used today measures bone mineral density, alone insufficient in predicting fractures and deciding on the proper treatment.

The Virtual Bone Biopsy ("VBB") add-on system for MRI scanners, is the only screening test to date that allows in-vivo analysis of bone microstructure, providing detailed 3D images and information on bone strength. Up to now, there has been no non-invasive tool for measuring overall bone strength. The VBB is the first non-invasive tool that can be used for calculating true fracture risk.

The technology, protected by six patents, is the result of more than ten years of research at the University of Pennsylvania. In pilot clinical trials MicroMRI proved that while it takes five years to notice treatment response with bone density tests, using the VBB enables assessment of the efficacy of treatment in as little as one year.
