AMD India design centre to work on Next-Gen microprocessors
Bangalore,
India: AMD has announced that it is opening an engineering
design centre in Bangalore, which is expected to open
in July. The AMD India Engineering Centre Private Ltd.
will contribute to the design of future generations of
AMD microprocessors. The standalone facility will occupy
approximately 38,000 square-feet and will be located in
the central business district of Bangalore.
AMD
is expected to hire 40 employees at the site this year,
and by the end of 2005 expects the design centre will
house up to 120 experienced chip design and development
engineers. Engineers at the design centre will work closely
with AMD's engineering teams in the U.S. and will help
define future microprocessor designs focused on meeting
the evolving user needs in India and other high-growth
markets. AMD plans to invest approximately US$5 million
over the next three years to establish the center and
ramp up operations. The AMD India Engineering Centre Private
Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of Advanced Micro
Devices, Inc.

World's
highest capacity 100GB 2.5-inch HDD
Tokyo: Toshiba Corporation has announced the world's
highest capacity MK1031GAS 2.5-inch hard-disk drives (HDD).
The new HDD delivers a 100GB storage capacity, and does
so in a drive only 9.5mm high. The MK1031GAS is ideally
suited for integration into portable PCs, especially those
with advanced audio-visual capabilities that need the
capacity to handle large video sources. Toshiba arrived
at this achievement by establishing a new benchmark for
areal density: 80-gigabits of data per square inch.
The key to achieving this was replacing the Pico Sliders
attached to the drive's heads, and which maintain the
appropriate distance from the disk during read and write
operations, with Femto Sliders that are 35 per cent smaller
and much lighter. Advances were also achieved in the thin-film
technology for both the head and the platter. Power consumption
of the "MK1031GAS" is approximately 20 per cent
lower on average than the company's current drive due
to pulse width modulation that controls disk rotation
speed by switching the power supply to the spindle motor
on and off at a certain frequency. A DC-DC converter is
also used in the power unit. Samples of the MK1031GAS
will be available in May.

PCTEL
to showcase Segue wireless products
San Francisco, USA: PCTEL, Inc. a leading provider
of wireless solutions, has announced that it will showcase
its Segue wireless mobility products at the 2004 EyeForWireless
conference and networking event in San Francisco, April
22 - 23. PCTEL will demonstrate the Segue Roaming Client,
the Segue CCS (Central Configuration Server) and SPI (Service
Provider Interface), the Segue Soft Access Point (AP),
and the Segue Analyzer. The Segue Roaming Client software,
when downloaded onto a laptop or PDA, enables carriers
to manage millions of connected devices over Wi-Fi, or
cellular networks.
Also featured at the show is the Segue SoftAP, which,
when bundled with a supported Wi-Fi Network Interface
Card, will convert any PC into a fully functional access
point and router, thereby eliminating the costly need
for external devices such as routers and access points.
The Segue Analyzer, an all-in-one handheld device, enables
Wi-Fi network engineers and IT managers to measure signal
propagation, monitor traffic and detect unwanted interference
and intruders in Wi-Fi (802.11) networks.
