Arvind Panagariya could be next RBI governor, say reports

NITI Aayog vice chairperson Arvind Panagariya could be the most probable choise as the next RBI governor, reports said today, adding that a formal announcement of his appointment could be made within a day or two.
Arvind Panagariya, a Columbia University professor before he joined the NITI Ayog as its vice chairman, has worked with the Asian Development Bank, the World Bank, IMF, WTO and the United Nations.
He is a known supporter of PM Modi's economic policy, unlike the other big economist Amartya Sen who often had critcised thje BJP government's policies.
Panagariya was appointed as the deputy chief of the Niti Aayog on 5 January 2015.
His name, however, was not among those doing the rounds in the media to succeed Rajan.
Panagariya has written 10 books in his career.
The government is in the lookout for a new RBI governor after Raghuram Rajan tenure ends on 4 September and he was not given another term.
Modi is currently on tour to Africa and a formal announcement to this effect could be made after his return, say reports.
