Cairn rejigs top deck; Simon Thomson replaces Gammel as CEO
16 Jun 2011
In a sweeping board shake-up, Edinburgh-based Cairn Energy Plc today announced that Bill Gammell would step down as chief executive officer (CEO) of the company at the end of this month to become non-executive chairman.
The oil explorer announced six role changes, which included a step up for Simon Thomson, who is currently the legal and commercial director at the company, to CEO.
Mike Watts will continue as deputy chief executive and finance director, while Jann Brown would become managing director, reporting to Thomson.
Norman Murray, the non-executive chairman since 2002, would stand down on 1 July to be replaced by Gammell.
In corporate governance terms, Gammell's shift from chief executive to chairman is rather unusual.
Gammel used to formerly play international rugby for Scotland. He led Cairn Energy at the time it made a discovery of a natural gas off the East Coast of India and following it up with a major oilfield in Rajasthan.
