Finance secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey appointed new Sebi chief

Tuhin Kanta Pandey, who is currently the finance secretary and secretary in the Department of Revenue, has been appointed as the new chairperson of Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) to succeed Madhabi Puri Buch whose tenure end today (28 February).
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Tuhin Kanta Pandey as the new Chairman of SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India), says an official release.
Pandey’s appointment is for a period of three years, from the day he assumes charge, and will remain so unless any fresh order is issued, the release stated.
Pandey’s tenure as the head of the market watchdog comes at a time when the Indian stock market under bear pressure with foreign funds selling off Indian stocks to withdraw funds. Foreign investors have withdrawn more than Rs1 lakh crore from Indian securities since January 2025.
Sebi chief Madhabi Puri Buch, who made major regulatory changes, including tightening of rules for the derivative markets, had also been put under great pressure by vested interests acting from overseas.
Buch has also brought in same-day settlement in trading and enforced tougher disclosure norms for corporates and fund houses.
