Lok Sabha to take up judge Sen’s case on 5 September
24 Aug 2011
The Lok Sabha will take up the motion for the impeachment of Calcutta high court judge Soumitra Sen on 5 and 6 September, minister for parliamentary affairs Pawan Kumar Bansal said in New Delhi on Tuesday.
Bansal initially said that the issue would be taken up on 4 and 5 September, but later clarified that it was a slip of tongue.
As in the Upper House, Sen would be allowed to put across his defence before the discussion begins. Sen has already said that he will use the opportunity; and may seek a judicial review if he is impeached.
The motion was supposed to have been taken up today but was postponed, perhaps due to the anti-corruption crusade by Anna Hazare.
Sen is charged with misappropriating Rs33 lakh that was in his custody as a court-appointed receiver in a 1984 case.
