IBM appoints new vice chairman and president
New York: Computer giant, IBM, announced that Mr. Samuel J Palmisano, currently senior vice-president and group executive in charge of IBM's server and enterprise storage business, will take over as president and chief executive from September 1 this year. Simultaneously, Mr. John M Thompson, currently senior vice-president and group executive of the IBM Software Group, is being appointed as vice-chairman, with effect from the same date.
Both Mr. Palmisano, 48, and Mr. Thompson, 57, are expected to be elected to the IBM board of directors at its Tuesday meeting.
While Mr. Palmisano will be responsible for IBM's operating units, including all product and services divisions as well as the company's sales and distribution and global financing businesses, Mr. Thompson will be responsible for IBM's efforts in next-generation Internet and wireless technologies and business relating to the Linux operating system.
