The IndiaAI Mission has selected eight projects from among a number of proposals received from the expression of interest (EoI) floated under the mission’s `Safe and Trusted AI Pillar,’ which aims to enhance ethical AI development.

The EoI covers a range of critical themes across sectors that include Machine Unlearning, Synthetic Data Generation, AI Bias Mitigation, Ethical AI Frameworks, Privacy-Enhancing Tools, Explainable AI, AI Governance Testing, and Algorithm Auditing Tools.

The aim is to ensure that adequate guardrails are in place through development of indigenous tools and framing of guidelines for ethical, transparent, and trustworthy AI technologies through deployment of locally developed projects.

Top Indian institutions have been entrusted with the job of ensuring that these AI models are safe and sound through use of tools like bias mitigation, machine unlearning and making AI ethical while ensuring privacy.

The eight projects were selected from the 2,000-odd proposals received from academic institutions, start-ups, research organisations and private enthusiasts. The selection was carried out by a committee consisting of various stakeholders who also provided technical expertise for evaluation of the proposals.

The projects selected are:

1. Machine Unlearning - from Indian Institute of Technology, Jodhpur, which is used in Generative Foundation Models;

2. Synthetic Data Generation - from Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, which aims at design and development of the method for generating Synthetic Data for Mitigating Bias in Datasets and the Framework for Mitigating Bias in Machine Learning Pipeline for Responsible AI

3. AI Bias Mitigation Strategy - from National Institute of Technology Raipur for Development of Responsible Artificial Intelligence for Bias Mitigation in Health Care Systems;

4. Explainable AI Framework - from Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT), Pune in partnership with Mindgraph Technology Pvt Ltd for Enabling Explainable and Privacy Preserving AI for Security;

5. Privacy Enhancing Strategy - from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi in partnership with Indian Institute of Technology, Dharwad, Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, Delhi and Telecommunication Engineering Center (TEC);

6. Robust Privacy-Preserving Machine Learning Models:

AI Ethical Certification Framework - from Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, Delhi in partnership with Telecommunication Engineering Center (TEC) - Nishpaksh tools for assessing fairness of AI model: AI Algorithm Auditing Tool;

7. Civic Data Labs from - ParakhAI - An open-source framework and toolkit for Participatory Algorithmic Auditing;

8. AI Governance Testing Framework – from Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham in partnership with Telecommunication Engineering Center (TEC) and Track-LLM, Transparency, Risk Assessment, Context & Knowledge for Large Language Models.

These projects align with the government’s vision of leveraging AI for inclusive growth, so that AI benefits all strata of society, foster technological self-reliance, and ensure ethical and responsible use of AI.

IndiaAI, an independent business division of the Digital India Corporation (DIC) under the ministry of electronics and IT, is the implementation agency of the IndiaAI Mission.
