In pulse oximetry test, blood oxygen levels in newborns are measured with a small skin sensor placed on a hand or foot.

Researchers say, the test identified babies with congenital heart defects which would otherwise be missed.

The cheap and quick test could save babies with congenital heart defects, according to doctors.

According to a study of 20,055 newborns, published in The Lancet, testing for oxygen levels in blood had proved more successful than other checks available.
