MR firm IDC India says Notebook PC market grows nearly 85 per cent in 3Q 2007

Gurgaon: According to market research firm IDC India, during 3Q 2007, the overall India client PC market grew 25.1 per cent year-on-year, over 3Q 2006, in terms of unit shipments to 1.8 million.

According IDC India’s report, for the same period, i.e. 3Q 2007 over 3Q 2006, desktop PC shipments showed a growth of 10.9 per cent, while notebook PC shipments showed a growth of 84.8 per cent.

In the combined client notebooks and desktops market, the report says the rankings remained unchanged, with HP retaining the top spot with a market share of 21.6 per cent. It was followed by HCL with a market share of 12.3 per cent, and Lenovo at 10.3 per cent, in terms of unit shipments during the third quarter of calendar year 2007 (3Q 2007).

In terms of desktop PC shipments HP retained its top position with a market share of 15.2 per cent, followed by HCL and Lenovo in second and third spots respectively during 3Q 2007.

In notebook PC shipments, HP retained the top spot with a market share of 37.8 per cent in 3Q 2007. Lenovo came in at the second spot and Acer climbed up to take the third spot.

According to Kapil Dev Singh, country manager at IDC India, portability, rather than mobility has emerged as the leading driver for the sustained growth in notebook PC shipments in India. He says that given the choice of portability, flexibility and ease of use and the narrowing of the price-performance gap that once existed between portables and desktops, consumers are almost overwhelmingly inclined to buy notebook PCs.

During 3Q 2007, notebook PC shipments to the home and small office home office (SOHO) segments grew by 166 per cent year-on-year and made up for 43 per cent of total notebook shipments. The next largest contributors to this trend were the enterprise and education segments.

Sanjit Sinha, associate vice president for research at IDC India, is quoted in the reports as saying “In an emerging market like India many an untapped pockets of opportunity for desktops still exist, as shown by the recent signs of revival of this market. In 3Q 2007, consumer desktop PC shipments recorded a 10.5 per cent year-on-year (3Q 2007 over 3Q 2006) growth as compared to a 1 per cent year-on-year decline in shipments recorded during the previous quarter, i.e. for 2Q 2007 over 2Q 2006. The desktop market will aim to sustain market momentum by reaching out to the untapped small and medium business (SMB) enterprises, e-Governance projects and consumer infrastructure builds up in C, D and E class cities.”

IDC India defines commercial desktops as all desktop PC units shipped to the business, government, or education markets, regardless of vendor hardware definition. The firm defines consumer desktops as all desktop PC units shipped to the home market, regardless of vendor hardware definition. All desktop units not shipped to the home market are excluded from this segment.
