100 strikers at Maruti's plant arrested for violence

Police today arrested 100 workers of the Maruti Suzuki Manesar plant in connection with the violence yesterday which left a senior company official dead and 50 others injured.

The official, who died in the violence triggered by a scuffle over suspension of an employee, following a heated exchange of words, was today identified as Awanish Kumar Dev, general manager, HR, at the plant.

According to Haryana industry minister Randeep Singh Surjewala, nearly 100 people had been arrested so far on various charges including murder, attempt to murder and destruction of property.

According to Haryana chief secretary P K Chaudhery, taking a serious view of the incident of violence at the plant, the state government had formed a special investigative team under assistant commissioner of police, Gurgaon, Ravinder Tomar, to investigate the matter.

In order to maintain law and order at the plant, 1,200 policemen have been deployed in and around the area, DCP Maheshwar Dayal said.

Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) said the Manesar plant had been shut down and production stood suspended. The plant with an annual capacity of 5.5 lakh units produces the Swift, Dzire, SX4 and A-Star models.

Meanwhile, the workers said they would not go for work till the government intervened and all the culprits were arrested.
