41 Mahindra Great Escape at the Great Thar Desert

18 Feb 2008

The 41st Mahindra Great Escape took place on Saturday 16 February 2008  in the fort town of Mandawa, located in Shekhawati district near Jaipur. This non-competitive rally saw 150 people drive through the Great Thar Desert in 40 vehicles which included the Scorpio, Getaway and Bolero, in addition to icons like the Legend, the Major and the Classic.

"With its undulating sand dunes and exciting route, the Rajasthan Great Escape is an off roader's delight and this year's drive gave participants a good idea of exactly what Mahindra vehicles are capable of when put to the test. This year, the vehicle line-up included the good old Mahindra Classic, Legend and Major as well as some of our latest vehicles such as the Scorpio, Getaway and Bolero which proved themselves admirably in the harshest of conditions", said Dr. Pawan Goenka, president, Automotive Sector, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.

The route this year was about 35 km long with sand dunes, rocky patches, steep inclines and sheer drops and took about 4 hours to cover.

First initiated in 1996, the Mahindra Great Escape is a non-competitive, off-road rally which is meant to encourage Mahindra customers to test the strength of their vehicles on terrain other than tarmac. Mahindra vehicles are known for their rugged and reliable nature, and can typically be driven over the roughest of surfaces. The Great Escape serves as a platform to highlight this incredible ability.

Aside from the National Great Escape held in Rajasthan ever year, Mahindra also conducts a series of regional Great Escapes in various parts of the country. In 2007, Great Escapes were held in Munnar in Kerala, Coorg in Karnataka and Siliguri in West Bengal. Over the years, the Great Escape has been held in diverse locations across India including Madhya Pradesh, Silvassa in Daman and Shahapur in Maharashtra.  In Rajasthan itself the event has been held in locations near Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Osia, Manwar and Jaipur.
