After Westinghouse, L&T ties-up with AECL to develop ACR 1000 nuclear reactors

22 Jan 2009

After announcing plans last week to fabricate 1000 MW reactors based on the Westinghouse design , Larsen & Toubro today said it had has signed a technology deal with Canada's Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) for technology to build the advanced ACR 1000 CANDU.

The two companies will develop a cost competitive model of the ACR 1000, the successful completion of which will be followed by joint efforts to offer the expertise for nuclear plants in India and abroad.

L&T said in a statement that AECL's  technology for PHWR developed is among the leading competitive nuclear technologies in the world in terms of capital cost, safety and efficiency.

L&T has played a lead role in equipment manufacture, construction and project management for pressurised heavy water reactors in India's domestic programme while AECL has pioneered the pressurised heavy water reactor (PHWR) technology across the world.

L&T and AECL expect to gain a substantial market for the ACR 1000 in India and abroad. L&T which is a major player in the nuclear power sector has plans to further enhance its position in the rapidly developing nuclear power sector by partnering with leading international companies in the field.

Atomic Energy of Canada Limited is a full service nuclear technology company providing services to nuclear utilities around the world. Established in 1952, AECL is the designer and builder of CANDU technology including the CANDU 6, one of the world's top-performing reactors.

On 16 January L&T signed up with Westinghouse Electric Company of the US to build nuclear power reactors in India (See: L&T-Westinghouse JV to make nuclear reactors in India) to undertake the fabrication and construction of nuclear plants of up to 1,000 mega Watt capacity in India as per design provided by Westinghouse.

The companies plan to build Westinghouse's AP1000 pressurised-water reactors. The details of the venture are being worked out.
