Agitated BBC journalists to go on ‘pen-down’ strike

12 Feb 2013

Journalists at the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) are preparing to start action to protest a programme of compulsory job cuts that the venerable broadcaster has introduced.

Hundreds of journalists, many of them represented by the National Union of Journalists, will start a work-to-rule action on Friday to protest mandatory redundancies.

The NUJ said that journalists will go on a one-day full strike on Monday.

The walkout on 18 February could hit the BBC's coverage of Scottish parliament and the Welsh Assembly, which both return from recess that day. It is also the date of the Armenian presidential election.

The cost-cutting programme, known as 'delivering quality first' (DQF), involves more than 2,000 redundancies across the BBC over five years.

A number of posts have been identified as being at risk by the end of March, including jobs in the national news division, BBC Scotland, and BBC Radio 5 Live.
