Apple sells one million iPads in 28 days

04 May 2010

Apple said yesterday that it has sold its one million iPad's in just three weeks of its launch, overtaking its iconic iPhone launch sales that achieved the same milestone in over ten weeks.

"One million iPads in 28 days - that's less than half of the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with iPhone," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "Demand continues to exceed supply and we're working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more customers."

The California-based company had launched its tablet called the iPad, a revolutionary electronic reader, on 28 January 2010, (See: Apple launches iPad for $499)  and sold upward of 300,000 on the first day, which included pre-ordered shipments as well as purchases at Apple retail stores in the US. Due to the strong demand in the domestic market, Apple had postponed the international launch of the iPad by one month, but later said that it would launch the product on 10 May.
Apple said that iPad users have already downloaded over 12 million apps from the App Store and over 1.5 million ebooks from the new iBookstore.
Developers have created over 5,000 new apps for iPad and will run almost all of the more than 200,000 apps on the App Store, including apps already purchased for its iPhone or iPod touch.

Apple has launched the Wi-Fi-only, the 16-GB priced at $499, and the 3G 64GB model at $629.
