Aviva to set up call centre in India; plans to employ 1,000 people

Bangalore: British insurance giant Aviva plc plans to set up a call centre in India, which could employ 1,000 people by end-2003. The company also plans to develop a claims-processing operation for its UK general insurance business in India.

The majority of jobs here would arise from staff vacancies and the anticipated turnover in Norwich Union's general insurance business in the UK. Aviva is planning to use the natural turnover and internal staff transfers in the UK to minimise any compulsory redundancies.

Aviva, which started operations in India through a life insurance joint venture, also outsources claims administrative services and software needs to Indian vendors.

“We are operating in an increasingly competitive environment and need to explore opportunities to improve our efficiency, while delivering high levels of service to our customers,“ says Aviva group chief executive Richard Harvey.
