BEML to to develop stainless steel EMU coaches

Defence public sector undertaking BEML has been awarded a developmental contract from the Railway Board for designing, manufacturing, supplying, testing and commissioning two rakes consisting of 18 stainless steel body AC electric multiple unit (EMU) coaches within two years.

Valued at Rs31 crore, the agreement has a provision for enhancing the quantity up to six rakes of 54 coaches, taking the total contract value to Rs92 crore.

BEML, which  has supplied metro coaches to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, will  make these corrosion resistant coaches and says it would have superior, passenger-friendly interiors and inbuilt safety features.

The egineering giant says, these coaches would also have a longer life cycle.

Once these EMUs are developed and pressed into service, BEML Limited will be addressing the huge demand of Indian Railways for about 3,000 EMU coaches valued at around Rs5,000 crore in the coming years.

This is the first time that BEML has designed and developed stainless steel AC EMU Coaches in in India.
