State-owned engineering and construction company Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has said it would recruit about 4,000 people a year for at least the next three years as the company is embarking on new joint ventures. The recruitments would include executive engineers.

B Prasada Rao, chairman and managing director of BHEL, told reporters in Tiruchirapalli that the company planned to enhance the head count to 52,000-55,000 by the end of 2012.

He also said the PSU has sent a proposal to the railway ministry to set up a manufacturing unit at the Railway Workshop in Kalcharapar in West Bengal. The proposed joint venture would enable BHEL to produce self-propulsion vehicles along with delicate components for the railways on an assured offtake, he said.

The company also has plans to start industrial training institutes to overcome the difficulty of finding artisans for BHEL's sub-contractors, Rao said.

He said the company has received a fresh order worth about Rs990 crore from Indian Railways to supply about 150 electric locomotives. The BHEL unit at Jhansi would manufacture and supply the engines, he added.

He said work on the two joint venture projects for power generation of 2x800 mw and 3x800 mw in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka respectively was expected to be completed within the next two months.

On BHEL's financials, Rao said the company has been posting a year-on-year growth of 20 per cent over the past five years owing to capacity addition initiatives. ''In the second quarter the growth in revenue was 21 per cent. We expect to attain the target of 62,000 mw by the end of the current five-year plan,'' he said.

Stating that BHEL was interested in manufacturing of nuclear power plant equipment, he said steps were also being taken to enhance its solar power generation to 8 mw by signing a memorandum of understanding with BEL (Bharat Electronics Ltd).
