BMW to recall 414 cars in China over defective electronic pumps

14 Apr 2012

German luxury car maker BMW will recall 414 BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce cars imported into China over defective electronic pumps that could potentially cause a fire.

China's top quality watchdog the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine yesterday said that the vehicles were produced between March 2011 and August 2011.

The recall includes the BMW 7-series, X5 and X6, Mini Cooper, and the Rolls-Royce Ghost.

The electronic pump cases could crack leading to short circuits and pump failures if engine coolant gets into the cracks. The defect may even cause fire to break out in certain circumstances, said the watchdog.

BMW's dealers will start replacing the defective pumps from 24 April free of charge.

Last month, BMW said that it would recall 120,246 imported vehicles in China due to potential problems with a battery-cable cover that could result in the electrical system malfunctioning.
