BMW to recall over 140,000 cars in China over defects in steering system

German luxury car maker BMW's Chinese joint venture is recalling more than 140,000 cars in China over defective plugs in the steering system, said China's top quality regulator.

General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of China said on its website that BMW's Chinese joint venture BMW-Brilliance will recall 143,215 5-series cars manufactured between 24 August 2009 and 31 August 2012.

BMW Brilliance is an equal joint venture between BMW and Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Ltd and is based in Shenyang of Liaoning province.

The regulator said that plugs in the electric power steering system are defective, which may lead to safety risks.

Within the scope of this recall some of the vehicles electrical machinery power steering of the seal on the power cord and the power supply wire diameter can not be an exact match.

In extreme cases, when the vehicle is driven on a flooded road, water may enter into the plug inside, causing the plug internal corrosion. The plug will rust, resulting in malfunctioning of the vehicle steering, leading to safety risks.

BMW Brilliance Automotive will start the recall from 23 September and change the electrical plugs for free.
