BSNL likely to cut STD rates

Mumbai: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL), the state-owned telecom major is likely to reduce domestic long distance (STD) rates across the country. This follows a reduction in Delhi-Mumbai call charges by the other state telecom operator MTNL.

BSNL refused to say whether it also make changes in rates for calls between two circles, but officials confirmed that there would be substantial reduction in STD tariffs. It is likely that tariffs between two circles (from one state to another) could be made local while call tariffs within the circle remain unchanged.

BSNL sources also said monthly rental may not be changed. New tariffs are likely to be implemented around the festival of Diwali.

All STD calls on BSNL network will be treated as local calls and charged Rs 1.20 for three minutes. This will come into effect starting November. BSNL will also reduce the monthly rental on its One-India plan from Rs 225 to Rs 180 a month, and double the number of free calls every month.
